By the time we pick up the story, Jesus had started his ministry. He was healing, teaching, and making crazy claims about himself. This trickled into his hometown and it wasn’t received well.
Look at what the locals said about him, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” Mark 6:2–3
But it goes further, they didn’t just doubt what he was saying they actually were offended by it. In their minds, they couldn’t see past the Jesus they knew as a little kid. They couldn’t imagine Jesus being more than what so many of them had accomplished. They saw him as a carpenter and nothing more.
They couldn’t see God in him.
Jesus responds, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” Mark 6:4
Jesus had something they didn’t have and that they couldn’t see- faith. Jesus had a faith that called him to something bigger. A faith that moved him to new truth and a different way of life.
Sometimes in life, the last people to join our big dreams are the people closest to us. They may be hesitant because it’s so different from what they have seen in your past, maybe they want to protect you or maybe it’s that they are a little jealous. Don’t let them influence you.
Take it from me, there is nothing like a person close to you getting onboard with your dreams and helping you make it happen! Thankfully, that’s Em for me. She puts up with a bunch of wild ideas and helps make them a reality!
So then, if God is giving you a big dream, follow His voice not the voice of the doubters. If someone in your life has been given a big dream, figure out how you can support them in it.
Jesus followers are dreamers, because we have been empowered to big things and change the world!
Don’t be afraid to dream big dreams. Walk in faith, because if God is in that dream then nothing will be able to stop it. It may take time, it may be hard, it may seem impossible, but take heart God is with you along the journey.
So, what dream has God placed on your heart today? Be steadfast and follow that dream no matter the outcome!
